If you and your class are using Google Docs on a regular basis on a Mac or Chromebook, you should consider enabling the offline editing feature. This will allow you and your students the ability to create and edit Google Docs, Sheets, Presentations (Slides), and Drawings without an internet connection.
*To edit Google Docs and Sheets offline on your mobile device, you must have the Google Docs and Sheets apps installed. All other files can be viewed using the Google Drive app.
You don't want to wait until you are offline to enable offline editing as this will not have provided your Google Drive the opportunity to sync your documents ahead of time. Once enabled, offline editing will sync your most recent 5GB of documents (that's a ton!).When the device is back online, any newly created or edited documents will sync and be up-to-date.
The directions at the this link will refer to "New Google Drive" and "Classic Google Drive".
When you are logged into your Google Drive in Chrome, if you have the New Google Drive, your left menu will look like this:
